Howard: Once Known, Slavery in Westford

Slavery in Westford may come as a surprise to some, but records indicate that at least 24 enslaved individuals lived in the town from 1730 to 1780. Unfortunately, there is limited historical information available about these individuals and their experiences. However, efforts have been made to compile information to gain a better understanding of their lives.

Leslie Howard explores this topic in her research, “Once Known: A History of Slavery in Westford.” She uncovers the hidden stories that have shaped the community in unexpected ways, providing insights into the lives of those who were enslaved and the impact they had on the community.
