Julian’s Fund Printing Block

From the Westford Academy Exhibit

This printing block was used to mark Westford Academy books purchased by the special fund, Julian’s Fund. The fund was established in 1858 in memory of Julian Abbot (1837-1857), who died in a North Billerica railroad accident. John William Pitt Abbot (1806-1872), who was a lawyer, Stony Brook Railroad president, co-founder of the Abbot Worsted Co, local politician, and WA Trustee, established the fund in his son’s name for students in need and the WA library. The fund existed into at least the 1920s, with the 1927 town report stating that the Trustees donated $300 from the fund to the science department.
