Charles Sargent House

Ca. 1900 W.1998.52g
Ca. 1870 W.1998.24.1ff

The house at 23-27 N. Main St was built in 1868 by Charles Grandison Sargent (1819-1878). It still stands today as 25 N. Main St. He founded C.G. Sargent & Sons Co, which existed from 1852 to 1990. The company originally built machinery for processing textiles, particularly wool drying, and the business was closely tied to the Abbot Worsted Co, Sargent being a co-founder.  In 1990, Sargent and Sons went bankrupt, and was bought out by Aeroglide, which later became part of the Buhler Group.

The house was owned by Charles’ son, Frederick (1843-1935) in 1900. It remained in the family well into the twentieth century. From 1955 to 1971, the house was the Graniteville Nursing Home. After, it was converted back into a residence. 25 N. Main St today via Google Maps.
