Featured Artifact of the Week

The Rustic

April 18, 1885, issue of The Rustic, a local newspaper. This weekly periodical appears short-lived, and known dates range from March 7 to April 18. It contained, local news, short stories, and advertisements, including one for Wright and Bemis of Graniteville. Wright and Bemis stores were located at N. Main St. and Broadway St. (then Front St), and were originally operated by Arthur Wright (1837-1900) and Henry Bemis (1865-1936). Walter Cummings Wright (1865-1936), Arthur’s son, ran the stores later.

While short-lived, like many of its kind, The Rustic was a precursor to the Westford Wardsman (1905-1919), Westford Eagle (1970-2019), and Eagle Independent (2019-2022). Click here for the digitized Rustic.
