May Day Photograph

From the Collection

Black and white, 6.5″ x 4.5″ photo of the Maypole dance at the Whitney playground on May 23, 1911. The festival was historically done around May 1st to mark the start of summer, while more recent labor traditions, like International Workers’ Day, also celebrate around this time. Today, the Whitney Playground is connected with the Frost Field, and is between the Frost School and Roudenbush Community Center. The photo belonged to Donald Frederick Robinson (1926-1997). He served in the US Coast Guard in WWII, and was later a Captain in the Westford Fire Department.
