Half-Gill Cup

From the Collection

This half-gill or 1/4 tin cup was used by Col John Robinson (1734-1805) throughout his service during the Revolutionary War. Government regulations during the war only allowed the cup to be filled no more than three times a day. John Robinson was born in Topsfield, MA. After marrying Huldah Perley (1742-1812) in 1764, he moved to Westford. He served as a town selectmen from 1771-1773. During the war, he led three companies of minutemen to Concord’s North Bridge on April 19, 1775. He also served at the Battle of Bunker Hill. His Westford home was on today’s Robinson Rd, which is also the location of the Robinson School.
