Abbot Hall Postcard

Real photo postcard of the Abbot Hall at the corner of Bradford and Pleasant Streets in Westford’s Forge Village. According to Playe.com, the stamp box dates the card to between 1918 and 1930, while the picture itself was taken prior to the 1919 renovation. The Abbot Worsted Co. built the Hall in 1880. It was used for stage performances, social events, and meetings, and later presented motion pictures. Other features included a bowling alley and even a library. Local tradition suggests that Franklin Roosevelt visited the Hall, as part of the documented Episcopalian services held in the hall by the Groton School community. After the Abbot Worsted Co. left Westford in the 1950s, the Hall was owned by the Murray Printing Co, and became known as the Murray Hall. There were two other Abbot Halls in Westford: one in Graniteville (now American legion Post 159), and one in Brookside-Nabnesset (now the H.E. Fletcher Club). The Hall in Forge Village was demolished in 1980.
