Postcard

Ca. 1958 Black and white postcard (5.5″ x 3.5″) of Lake Nabnassett from Edwards Beach, showing the beach, trees, water, and the far shore. The postcard made by Merrimack Post Card Co., 110 Merrimac St., Haverhill, MA. The extra “T” in Nabnasset was a common spelling into the 1950s. Moses Edwards (1819-1889) purchased the ten acre beach property in 1867, according to the Westford Gazetteer. In 1954, the town tried to acquire the private beach facility after the death of Moses’ son, Charles (1860-1953), but residents voted the attempt down. The 1980 Town Report states the town’s Conservation Commission ultimately purchased the property from Charles’ grandson, Sumner Edwards (1907-1991) — and is wife Grace (1907-1998), for $125,000. Today, the land is a public park (free for residents) run by the town’s Recreation Department, featuring a playground and seasonal facilities.
