1944 black and white photo of the Westford Water Co. pumping station. The company was the direct predecessor to the Westford Water Department. According to the history of the Westford Water Department, the Water Company was founded by eleven local businessmen, as a result of the town failing to appropriate funds for a public water supply in 1907. In 1955, due to the legal limitations of being a private water company — and the post-war population boom, the board and stockholders voted to sell the company to the town. The sale was successfully voted upon that year by the town, making the company into a town department.
