Footlocker

From the Military Exhibit

Black-colored, wood footlocker that belonged to Wayland Francis Balch (1839 – 1937) of Westford. The container is labeled “W.A.B. 1864.” He was the last surviving Civil War veteran in Westford. Born in Vermont, Wayland grew up in New Hampshire. He served in the 11th NH Infantry in Companies C and E. After the war, he moved to the Parker Village section of Westford, and became a charter member of the Spalding Light Cavalry Association. He had three daughters with Sarah Richardson Balch (1841-1913): Lena Balch Currier (1866-1949), Agnes Danforth Balch (1870-1922), and professional artist Mary “May” Balch (1875-1961).
