J.V. Fletcher Library Postcard

From the collection

This real photo postcard has a picture of Westford’s J.V. Fletcher Library. It highlights the view to the left of the front entrance, facing away from the windows. According to Playes.com, the card was printed between 1926 and 1940, based on the stamp box. The library, construction of which largely funded by past Westford resident Jonathon Varnum Fletcher (1812-1899), has since expanded and redecorated significantly since its dedication in 1896. According to the Fletcher Library, the first significant renovations occurred in the 1960s, with J.V. Fletcher’s great granddaughter, Marion Winnek (1883-1977), funding the basement’s conversion into a children’s room. Later, the wings on the east and west sides of the building were completed in 1989. Efforts for another renovation and expansion are in motion for a tentative construction around 2022.
