Spooky Artifact of the Week

Headstone

Headstone of Mabel Maria Symmes (1886-1907), who was the daughter of Thomas (1843-1912) and Nancy Hale (1857-1939). The carved stone is a white marble ( 13 5/8″ w. x 10 5/8″ h, x 6 3/8″ d.), with some weathering. It was found on the property of 109 Lowell Road, Westford, in May of 2019, during site work for a new house. This property was part of the Axel T. Lundberg Monument shop located at Brookside and Chamberlain Roads during the early 1900s. The headstone was the original marker at Mabel’s grave, but when Thomas died, it was replaced by a family monument made by Lundberg.

Mabel was the granddaughter of Civil Engineer Edward Symmes (1806-1888), who made the 1855 Map of the town. She and her family lived in the still-standing 1882 house at 72 Graniteville Rd.
