Turner's Public Spirit, June 10, 1922

A look back in time to a century ago

By Bob Oliphant

“Center.  Charles Hildreth, town clerk, spent the weekend at a camp in Middleboro, the occasion being a reunion of the class of 1901, Dartmouth college, of which Mr. Hildreth was a member.

“Mrs. Hilda Bosworth attended a theatre party in Boston last Saturday as the guest of Miss Marjorie Seavey.

“Mrs. Harry Gumb, Boston road, has recently returned from a three-weeks’ trip to Maine.  The trip included a visit to Rumford, Lewiston, Augusta, Wells Pond, Bryant’s Pond, Togus and other towns.  While in Togus the Soldiers’ home was visited.  Part of the time was spent at the Rangeley Lakes, from which place Mrs. Gumb brought home a large salmon trout.  The return trip was made by auto as far as Portland and thence by rail.

“Frank Johnson is driving a new Oakland car.

“The fire department was called out on Wednesday afternoon to attend a fire near Carlisle station, caused by sparks from an engine on the N.Y, N.H. & H. R.R.

“The Moon car found on the state road near Waynes’ bridge, Monday night, May 29, badly burned and abandoned, has been claimed by the owner, Mr. Sears, of Woburn.  The car was stolen in Lowell while the owner was attending the theatre.

“The schools of the town, with the exception of the academy, closed on Friday of this week for the summer vacation.

“William Hunt has a new Studebaker car.

“An eight-club twilight league, to be known as the Stony Brook Twilight league, has been formed.  The following clubs have been entered: Forge Village, Graniteville, Westford Center, Billerica, Tyngsboro, St. John’s of North Chelmsford, West Chelmsford and Chelmsford Center.  The games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, beginning this week, and continue until September….

“Academy Note.  Westford academy was again defeated by the Townsend high school team in Townsend on Wednesday afternoon, May 31, the score being 22 to 10.

“On Wednesday afternoon the academy team played the Ayer high team in Ayer and were defeated.

“In the recent state-wide athletic meet twenty-five high schools were entered.  Those eligible to take part were members of the two upper classes, and 80% of the boys had to enter.  Cohasset was first with 30 ½ points out of a possible 50, and Westford academy was sixth on the list with 25.7 points out of a possible 50.  It may be seen from this report that the academy boys made a very creditable showing in their athletic work.

“The honors of the class of 1922 have been given out as follows: Valedictory, Helen Kimball; salutatory, Carolyn Bell, Brookside; class history, Norman Cutler, Parkerville; class will, Florence Caunter, Graniteville; declamations, Lawrence Ingalls, of the Center, and Catherine O’Neil, of Forge Village; class prophecy, Gordon Seavey; class grinds, Alice Walsh, of Forge Village; presentation of class gift, Alice Hosmer of Forge Village.  The acceptance of the class gift will be given by Raymond Shea of the junior class.  The class colors this year will be crimson and white; class flower, sweet peas; class motto, ‘Honor lies in honest toil.’

“The senior class enjoyed their annual outing last week Friday.  They went in autos furnished by the pupils, visiting Nantasket Beach during the day, returning to Boston, dining at The Victoria, visiting the Boston public library and attending the Copley theatre at night were among the attractions.  They were accompanied by Miss Dorothy Latham of the faculty….  Those who attended were John Kimball, Eric Anderson, Norman Cutter, Leo McDonald, Orrin Treat, Gordon Seavey, Vaurner Lundgren, Rupert Lundberg, Lawrence Ingalls, Helen Griffin, Carolyn Bell, Frances Cushing, Florence Caunter, Alice Hosmer, Helen Kimball, Kathleen Kelly, Alice Walsh and Catherine O’Neil of the senior class and Raymond Shea of the junior class.

“About Town.  Allister McDougal [sic, MacDougall] has sold his farm adjoining Arthur H. Burnham’s on the state road [Littleton Road] to two young men from Boston….

“Strawberries have commenced to ripen at the Old Oaken Bucket farm.

“Observing eyes have noticed the blue herons flying over here every day.  Some bird lovers from here have been over to Tyngsboro to see the colony of blue herons there.  They go over Westford every day, flying down to the sea to get fresh fish which they bring back to feed to the young herons.  Once upon a time we had blue herons on the Stony brook.

“Graniteville.  The Abbot Worsted club met defeat at the hands of the Fore River club of Quincy at the Abbot playground in Graniteville on last Saturday by the score of 5 to 4.  Williams, Davidson and Carrigan did the battery work for the Abbots….”
