From Sheep to Wool- The Abbot Mills

Westford works together as a flourishing and united community, with a large, diverse population. Westford as we know it today was heavily influenced by the Abbot Mills of the past. The Abbot Worsted Company created yarn out of sheeps wool and goat hair. These loads of materials would arrive in barrels of veils. The company turned these rough materials into yarn through a lengthy process of sorting, scouring, drying, and carting. After this the veils would then be combed, drawn, spun and twisted into yarn.

To prepare the yarn for distribution and sewing, it would be spooled and realed. These mills were placed in Westford due to its many water sources. Although the Abbot mills were manufacturers of goods, the company also strived to create a happy and united community. Through this ideal, the company created various sports teams and activities for all workers. During this time period, people could only immigrate to America if they had a probable reason or guaranteed job.

The Abbot Mills was a great spot for these people to find a home, as it offered a large amount of job opportunities. This combination allowed people from all over Europe to gather in Westford, eventually building up to the community we see today.
