From Sheep to Wool- The Abbot Mills

Westford is a thriving and united community with a large, diverse population. The town as we know it today was significantly shaped by the Abbot Mills in the past. The Abbot Worsted Company produced yarn from sheep’s wool and goat hair. These raw materials arrived in barrels covered by veils. The company transformed these rough materials into yarn through a lengthy process that involved sorting, scouring, drying, and carting. Following this, the fibers were combed, drawn, spun, and twisted into yarn.

The yarn was spooled and reeled to prepare it for distribution and sewing. The mills were established in Westford due to the abundance of water sources in the area. Although Abbot Mills was primarily a manufacturer of goods, the company also aimed to foster a happy and united community. To support this vision, they created various sports teams and activities for all workers.

During that time, people could only immigrate to America if they had a valid reason or a guaranteed job. The Abbot Mills provided a great opportunity for these individuals, as it offered a wealth of job prospects. This combination attracted people from all over Europe, leading to the vibrant community we see in Westford today.
