This is a 12″ x 10″ black and white print of a glass negative taken by Charles Lewis Hildreth (1879-1968). It depicts North Main Street in the Graniteville section of town, specifically around Grieg’s Corner. The trolley tracks in the image lead toward what is now known as Beacon Street, which has been converted into a rail trail. The text “Main St. Graniteville near Easterly End” is inscribed on the back of the print.
Most of the trolley lines for the Lowell & Fitchburg Street Railway, laid between 1905 and 1906, were shut down and removed in Westford between 1919 and 1929. However, the Graniteville-Forge Village line continued operating until 1932. Notably, the stone retaining wall on the left and the house behind it are still standing today.
Grieg’s Corner is named after John Grieg (1837-1921) and his family, who lived at what is now 2 North Main Street. He served as the Overseer and Superintendent at the Abbot Worsted Mills for 40 years. The family later resided at 124 Main Street, near Fairview Cemetery.
