Business Card
Business card for Polly’s Restaurant from the 1950s. It measures 31/2 x 2″ in size and states, “GOOD FOOD!” in a red-colored block featuring two people sitting behind a window. The card highlights that they served steaks, chops, seafood, and alcohol. A variety of toasted sandwiches were also offered in the 1950s. With numbered street addresses not yet common in the area, the location was established on the card via “Minot’s Corner” (the area of Cornerstone Square today), and uniquely by saying to “Look for the airplane on the roof.” The phone number on the card also features a telephone number with an Exchange Name, “MYRTLE 2-7381.” This type of standardized phone number was common in the 1960s, especially in rural areas, prior to the seven-digit number local number (10 today counting the area code). The caller entered the number equivalent of the highlighted letters, “MY,” creating the familiar 692-7381.
Costa Polly (1908-1998) opened the restaurant in 1941 at Minot’s Corner, which is also known as Cornerstone Square today. It was the one with an airplane on the roof. Polly’s was closed by 1970, with a Mobil gas station now at the site.
The card was donated by Westford resident Sandra Bergeron in 2024.
