Photograph
Black and white photo from 1950 of Fred Shugrue (1892-1976) cutting ice at Long Sought For Pond. The operation was near campground property owned by Minnie Book, who sold the property to Horace Wyman (1912-1985) in 1955. After being sold 2004, is today also know as the Summer Village and traditionally Wyman’s Beach.
Ice harvesting was seen mostly on Forge Pond until 1931 and Burge’s Pond into the early 1900s. By the 1930s, refrigeration systems put an end to ice harvesting as a major business. The photo was taken by the mother of Marion Dodge Thompson (1927-2010). Marion was a past volunteer and board member of the Westford Museum.
