Receipt

1794 Receipt received of Samuel Fletcher (1754-1838) for three pounds, sixteen shillings, and ten pence for the work in hewing and laying underpinnings of the original Westford Academy building, which houses the Westford Museum today. James Proctor, Jr. and William Park sign it. In 2024, the amount would be almost £400, or nearly $500. According to the UK National Archives, that amount would be about 25 days’ worth of wages for a skilled tradesman of the 1790s.
