Calendar

A ladies’ perfumed calendar (advertisement) from 1893 specifically advertised Hoyt’s German Cologne of E.W. Hoyt & Co, with a depiction of a presumably German girl holding fragrance items. This company’s dental product, Rubifoam For the Teeth, is also advertised. According to cliffhoyt.com, this company was founded by Eli Waite Hoyt (1838-1887) of Lowell, MA. Their “German” cologne first appeared in 1870, and calendar-based advertisements were common soon after. The company left Lowell in 1951.

Our calendar was sold at the Fletcher Store at 6-9 Lincoln St. The store was built by John Bateman Fletcher (1802-1888) around 1850. His son, John Marion Fletcher (1846-1923), and grandson, John Herbert Fletcher (1880-1960), later owned the store. In 1958, the store was closed. The still present Connelly Insurance has owned the property since 1963.
