Color Postcard

From the Postcard Collection

Color picture postcard of an elm tree on the estate of Miss Ella Hildreth (1849-1924) in a field during the summer. The card is dated September 9, 1916. It was sent to Miss M. Clark of Malden from Huldah C. The card was printed by Frank W. Swallow Post Card Company, which specialized in local postcards from 1896 to the 1920s, and published by John Herbert Fletcher (1880-1960), who was the postmaster in 1916. J. Herbert ran the post office out of his store at 8 Lincoln St (6-9 Lincoln St. today).

Ella Hildreth’s estate was also known as Prospect Hill Farm, which was located at 10 Hildreth St. The house on the property still stands today.

The card reads:

“This is a lovely place, and we are enjoying every minute. A beautiful lake is nearby and we are out rowing all we wish. Hope Teddie and Sir Toby are good. Kindest regards, Huldah C. Aug. 9-16.”
