Painting

Oil painting of the Howard Homestead on Howard Road, painted by Amelle B. Hand of Newton Rd, Littleton, MA. 21″ x 17″ including brown wooden frame. A snowy winter scene is depicted. Built before 1853 by Calvin Howard (1792-1883), the homestead included 105 acres, east of Howard Road to Rte 110. The house came down in early 1960. The barn burned in winter 1967, due to the snow keeping firefighters from the barn. Calvin’s son, Calvin Luther (1846-1926) and wife Mary Jane Hale, raised their five children there. Their youngest child Alice Mabel (1886-1968) graduated from Simmons College with a library science degree. After, she assisted her brother John (1878-1962) with the farm, while also working at Westford’s J.V. Fletcher Library.
