About Town. The New Years Eve dance given by the young ladies of the Unitarian church was well attended in spite of the inclement weather. The hall was beautifully decorated with cheerful red, with a background of hemlock. “A happy New Year” hung above the platform to give a suggestive greeting. As the Unitarian church clock struck twelve the following lassies came in with pinks for each one: Marjorie Seavey, Hazel Hartford, Lillian Sutherland and Evelyn Hamlin. It was fitting that the Germania ladies’ orchestra of Haverhill furnished music. Congratulations to the young ladies for their successful dance. The young men are planning an advertisement party for the middle of the month.
Tonight the Westford A.A. bowling team will play a match game in Lowell. Last week they played the Lowell machine shop team, defeating them by thirty-two pins.
Center. After many years of agitating the matter, what has resulted in the spur track to Westford Center is practically completed. The overhead wiring to the end of the line is in place; also, the feed wire which is to bring the power from Forge. Some minor details yet remain to be completed. If the condition of ice and snow that has prevailed for the last few weeks continues, it is doubtful if the management undertakes to operate the cars before spring.
Miss May Balch, supervisor of drawing in the public schools of South Hadley, has been enjoying a vacation at home. Miss Balch was an interested listener of Mrs. Cooper’s paper on art at the Tadmuck club Tuesday afternoon.
Warren Wright has been confined to the house recently, suffering with a large carbuncle.
The R.F.D. mail carriers, S. H. Balch and Frank C. Wright, had a holiday New Year’s day, no mail being delivered on their routes that day. Something in the way of compensation for having no Christmas day.
Forge. One of the most practical Christmas gifts that have been reported to us was the gift of Daniel Hanley to his family. A steam heating plant has been installed by him, and the finishing touches were put on the day before Christmas. It was a pleasant surprise to most of the family at their annual reunion on the next day. The family gathering this year consisted of eighteen members, the visitors being Mr. and Mrs. John J. Hanley and daughter, Wm. D. Hanley, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Downey and three children, all of Marlboro; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Daley and two children of Portsmouth, N.H. The latter extended their visit and returned on Monday.
W. H. Bennett has suffered the loss of both a horse and a cow within a few days.
Miss Regina Berthiaume of this village and William Tousignant of Graniteville were married at St. Catherine’s church on Wednesday, Dec. 26, by Rev. Edmund T. Schofield.
The Abbot Worsted Co. are building three new houses on Bradford st.
In spite of the drenching rain on New Year’s eve a large party of our young people attended the dance at Westford. R. D. Prescott’s two-horse sled carried the interesting number of twenty-three. They all report a jolly time and that neither they nor their comfort were much dampened by the weather.
Graniteville. The alterations on the [Sargent] schoolhouse here are now being pushed rapidly, but the work will not be finished for at least two weeks. As in most cases of this kind when repairs are being made, the work is much more extensive than was at first supposed. With the installing of the new heating system it was found that the old chimney did not come up to the requirements of the state inspectors, so the entire structure was torn down and built anew. This with other needed improvements will keep the carpenters and masons busy for several days.

About Town. The appraisal of property at the town farm, which is an annual, and the dinner of the town officials at the same place, which is also an annual, will be held the first Saturday in February. This early notice is thus given that the officials may have ample time to prepare appetites to fit into one of those premeditated dinners of Boynton’s. Yet like as not this event will set the tax rate one octave higher.
Eben Tallent is again on the sick list. He was under the impression that he had the grippe and several side issues for accompaniment. Dr. Wells was called and confirmed the impression of his patient, and left advice and medicine to remove the impressions.
At a meeting of the selectmen last Saturday evening, Frank C. Wright, Harwood L. Wright and Everett Woods were appointed to appraise the property at the town farm. Evidently the selectmen desire a right appraisal and their selection is nearly all right. If they display poor judgment in the appraisal the selectmen have made it easy for them to take to the woods.
Lundberg & Nelson, who purchased the lot of land at Brookside, corner of Lowell and Chamberlain roads, are harboring thoughts looking toward erecting buildings on the lot. At present they are improving the spring-like winter weather and the land by furnishing a ditch for the water to transport itself in.
A. A. Hildreth is getting out lumber for his new house.
John Adams Taylor left Tuesday for Mercersburg academy, Penn.
Edward Abbott and W. R. Taylor, Waldo Prescott and J. A. Taylor found Forge pond fine for their ice boating last Saturday afternoon.
Selectman Spaulding is cutting abut 700,000 [board feet?] of lumber in Carlisle. Wallace Johnson has the contract for hauling to the portable mill.
Graniteville. The ladies’ aid society of the Methodist church met with Mrs. Lucy Blood on last Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. W. H. Wall and Mrs. William Fitch of Lynn recently visited friends in this village.
Carl Gustaf Anderson, a well-known stone worker of this village, died at his home on Main st., on Friday morning, Jan. 4, after an illness of only a few days, the cause of his death being pneumonia. He leaves a wife and three small children, as well as a large circle of friends, to mourn his loss. The funeral took place from his late home last Sunday afternoon at two o’clock and was very largely attended, many being present from out of town. The services were conducted by Rev. W. E. Anderson of the Methodist church. The members of Loyal Help lodge, I.O.O.F., M.U., of Forge Village, of which the deceased was a member, attended the services at the house in a body, and also accompanied the remains to the cemetery, where the service for the dead was conducted by brother William Burnett. The floral offerings included:
A large spray, with purple ribbon, with word “Husband,” from wife; spray of carnations, with word “Papa,” from children; large pillow roses, carnations and galyx, with letters in blue immorteles, “I.O.O.F., F.L.T., M.U.,” Loyal Help lodge; wreath, with purple ribbon, inscribed “Swedish friends,” Charles Bengtson, John Mattson, August Lundburg, B. Johnson; pillow, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hansen, Andrew Anderson, H. Anderson, W. Lvenson [sic], J. A. Ellison; spray, Mr. and Mrs. Mystrom; spray, Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Hildreth; spray, W. H. Read.
The bearers, all members of his lodge, were Alfred Prinn, O. A. Nelson, Fennimore Morton, Edward Hunt, Henry Catchpole, August Lundberg. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Westford.
Mrs. Anderson feels very grateful for the many kindnesses extended to her during her late bereavement by neighbors and friends, and those who showed their sympathy by their many floral offerings.
