Telegraph Key

From the Collection

Vibroplex Semiautomatic Telegraph Key. It was first sold in 1926, and was branded as the “Lightning Bug” during the late 1930s. Telegraphy primarily used morse code, which was developed in the mid 19th century. The technology was used into the 20th century. It has now been supplanted by digital communication technologies. However, telegraphs and morse code are still used amongst hobbyists.

Our telegraph model was discontinued around 1982. It was used by lifelong Westford resident Thomas Alfred Hughes, Jr (1926-2008). He had an interest communication technology from a young age, receiving a Ham Radio license at age 15. During WWII, he served as a radio operator. He was later a professional electrical engineer, as well as a charter member if the Police Amateur Radio Team.
